SHERIFF'S OFFICE INCIDENT BRIEFINGS - MAY 8TH, 2018

During the week of April 30 – May 6, deputies of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to 1,504 calls for service throughout the community.

Burglary: 18-22884

On May 2, 2018 Deputy Bowlan responded to Calvert Towne Drive, Prince Frederick for the report of a burglary that had already occurred. The victim advised she observed damage to the back door of the residence as if someone had kicked the door in. The home was vacant and there was no further damage. The estimated value of the damaged door is $500.

On April 30, 2018 Deputy Flynt responded to Sheridan Drive, Owings for the report of damaged property. The complainant advised the glass on her back slider door to her basement had been shattered.

On April 30, 2018 Deputy Lorenzano responded to Duchess Lane, Huntingtown for the report of damaged property. The complainant advised sometime between midnight and 7:00 AM an unknown suspect shattered the left rear passenger window on his vehicle.

On May 1, 2018 Dfc. Ostazeski responded to Catalina Drive, Lusby for the report of damaged property. The victim stated sometime between midnight and 7:00 AM an unknown suspect damaged the rear window of her vehicle. The estimated value of the damaged window is $290.

On May 5, 2018 Dfc. Rediker responded to Holly Drive, Port Republic for the report of damaged property. The complainant advised she arrived home to find eggs smashed on the siding of her house as well as a bag containing feces on her front porch. The estimated value of damaged property is $50.

Theft: 18-22715

On May 1, 2018 Deputy Flynt responded to the BP gas station in the Dunkirk Town Center for the report of a theft. The complainant advised sometime between April 18^th and May 1^st, an unknown suspect stole a 5’x8’ enclosed U-Haul trailer from the business.

On May 2, 2018 Dfc. Aurich responded to the Dunkirk Walmart for the report of an attempted theft. The unknown suspect was stopped at the door, and multiple items were recovered including socks, tank top t-shirts, underwear and an RCA converter box. The total value of the property is $99.

On May 3, 2018 Dfc. Aurich responded to Uncle Charlie’s Spur, Owings for the report of a motor vehicle theft. The victim advised between May 2^nd at 8:45 PM and May 3^rd at 8:00 AM an unknown suspect stole her Ford Fusion out of her driveway.

On May 5, 2018 Deputy Crum responded to Palisades Drive, Dunkirk for the report of a theft. The victim advised two of his gold rings were stolen in mid-January. One ring with a three carat diamond was priced at $15,000. The other with 5 small diamonds was priced at $6,000.

Arrests:

On April 30, 2018 Dfc. Fox responded to 5^th Street, North Beach for the report of a disturbance. Tristao Commodore (40) was extremely obnoxious and uncooperative when confronted by officers. Dfc. Fox, Dfc. Cress and Deputy Crum restrained Commodore while he actively resisted arrest and put up a struggle. Commodore was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and charged with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and Second Degree Assault on Law Enforcement.

On May 3, 2018 Deputy Ridgely conducted a traffic stop at the Prince Frederick Wawa. The driver, Brian Robert Simmons (28), was asked to step out the car and was searched by Deputy Sampson. A search of his person revealed Vyvanse, marijuana, Suboxone and a substantial amount of cash. A search of his vehicle revealed an abundant amount of drug paraphernalia, more drugs, cell phones, and bank cards that did not belong to him. Simmons was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center where he was charged with CDS: Possession with Intent to Distribute and CDS: Possession of Paraphernalia.

On May 5, 2018 Deputy Rzepkowski responded to the Dunkin Donuts-Baskin Robbins in Lusby for a disorderly subject. Prior to this call, the subject, Sean Luke Braziel (27) was issued a trespass warning for the Lusby Commons Shopping Center due to him being disorderly there. Braziel was placed under arrest for Disorderly Conduct and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center.

MAY 5TH DUI CHECKPOINT

On May 5^th, 2018 the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Maryland State Police, conducted two separate Driving Under the Influence Checkpoints.  In total, there were approximately 900 vehicle/citizen contacts as a result of the checkpoints.  As a result of the checkpoints there was 1 DUI arrest, several CDS under 10 grams citations issued, and 2 criminal CDS arrests.

During the week of April 23 – April 29, deputies of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to 1,336 calls for service throughout the community.

Burglary: 18-21161

On April 23, 2018 Deputy Ridgely responded to Sheridan Point Road, Prince Frederick for the report of a burglary. The victim stated that an unknown suspect(s) broke into the detached garage and stole two 65 Holly Carburetors. The value of stolen property is $1,500.

On April 27, 2018 Deputy Ridgely responded to Sandy Point Road, Prince Frederick for the report of a burglary. The victim stated than an unknown suspect(s) attempted to break into the residence from a bedroom window. It was determined no items were stolen from the residence.

Theft: 18-22311

On April 29, 2018 Dfc. Kreps responded to Emmanuel Church Road, Huntingtown for the report of a theft. The victim stated that an unknown suspect(s) stole the registration plate from their trailer. The value of stolen property is $51.

Arrests:

On April 23, 2018 Dfc. Holt responded to the Weis, Solomons for a disturbance call. Upon arrival, Deputy Holt made contact with the suspect later identified as Kevin Thompson (28) of Lexington Park in the parking lot. It was determined that Thompson had two loaded handguns in the vehicle. Thompson was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and charged with Handgun on Person and Handgun in Vehicle.

On April 23, 2018 Dfc. D. Naughton responded to Sneade’s Ace Home Center, Lusby for the report of a theft. Deputy Naughton arrived on scene and obtained the description of the suspect and was informed two Dewalt Compact Drills had been stolen. The suspect was located in the store and identified as Richard Tucker (33) of California. Tucker was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center where he was charged with Theft: $100 to under $1,500.

On April 26, 2018 Deputy Crum conducted a traffic stop in the area of the Route 2/4 split. Deputy Crum approached the vehicle to make contact with both occupants inside and could immediately smell a strong odor chemical emitting from the vehicle. While attempting to get identification from both subjects, they appeared to be disoriented and confused. Both subjects were asked to step out of the vehicle for a search to be conducted. The search resulted in narcotics. The driver later identified as Danielle Murphy (33) of Prince Frederick and the passenger Ryan Graves (39) of Prince Frederick. Both Murphy and Graves were placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center, where they were charged with CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana (PCP).

On April 27, 2018 Deputy Spalding conducted a traffic stop at the North Beach Town Hall. While making contact with the driver later identified as Jay Judy (23) of Crofton, Deputy Spalding could smell the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Judy was asked to step out of the vehicle for a search to be conducted. The search resulted in multiple baggies of marijuana. Judy was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center where he was charged with CDS: Possession with Intent to Distribute.

On April 29, 2018 Deputy Sampson conducted a traffic stop in the area of S Solomons Island Road and Hallowing Point Road, Prince Frederick. While making contact with the driver later identified as Steven Moreland (24) of Edgewater, Deputy Sampson could smell the odor of burnt marijuana emitting from the vehicle. A search was conducted of Moreland and narcotics and paraphernalia were located. A search was also conducted of the passenger in the vehicle later identified as Madison Pignona (24) of Grasonville. The search resulted in narcotics and paraphernalia. Moreland was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and charged with CDS: Possession with Intent to Distribute, CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana (Alprazolam), and two counts of CDS: Possession of Paraphernalia. Pignona was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and charged with CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana (Alprazolam) and two counts of CDS: Possession of Paraphernalia.

SHERIFF'S OFFICE INCIDENT BRIEFINGS - APRIL 23RD, 2018

During the week of April 16 – April 22, deputies of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to 1,477 calls for service throughout the community.

Theft: 18-19679

On April 16, 2018 Dfc. Y. Bortchevsky responded to Bay Front Park in Chesapeake Beach for the report of a theft. The victim stated that sometime between 1:30 PM and 3:15 PM an unknown suspect broke into her vehicle and stole her MD driver’s license.

On April 18, 2018 Deputy Bowlan responded to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office for the report of a theft. The victim stated on April 13^th between 12:20 PM and 4:00 PM an unknown suspect stole two pairs of shoes that were delivered to his home on Dunleigh Court. The total value of stolen property is $665.

On April 19, 2018 Dfc. Callison responded to Salisbury Place, Prince Frederick for the report of a theft. The victim stated that sometime between April 18^th at 8:00 PM and April 19^th at 10:25 AM an unknown suspect stole the handicap sticker off his vehicle that was parked in front of his residence.

On April 22, 2018 Dfc. Burggraff responded to Thunderbird Drive, Lusby for the report of a theft. The victim advised sometime between April 21^st at 9:00 PM and April 22^nd at 6:00 AM and unknown suspect removed her mailbox from its post and stole it. The value of the stolen property is approximately $50.

Theft: 18-20922

On April 22, 2018 Deputy Lorenzano responded to the Dunkirk Walmart for the report of a theft. An unidentified subject was seen exiting the store with a cart full of unpaid items. When approached by an employee, the suspect became hostile then fled the scene, leaving the cart and miscellaneous items behind. The items in the cart added up to $368.10.

On April 22, 2018 Dfc. Ostazeski responded to Sneade’s Ace Hardware in Lusby for the report of a theft. The complainant stated an unknown suspect stole a Dewalt 20 volt drill from the store. The value of the stolen property is $129.99.

Arrests:

On April 19, 2018 Dfc. T. Buckler responded to Fastop in Chesapeake Beach for the report of a disorderly subject. Terrell Stepney (25) was told multiple times that he needed to leave the store, but he refused. Stepney was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center where he was charged with Trespassing.

On April 21, 2018 Dfc. Bradley responded to Buckets Sports Bar in Lusby for the report of a disorderly subject. Dfc. Callison was on scene with the subject, later identified as Franky Delph Jr (40). Delph was asked to leave the property multiple times, however, he refused and continued to yell and curse at the officers. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center where he was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Failure to Obey a Lawful Order, Resisting Arrest and Trespassing.

On April 21, 2018 Dfc. Y. Bortchevsky responded to Brookeview Court, Chesapeake Beach for the report of a suspicious vehicle. Dfc. Bortchevsky approached the vehicle and noticed the rear passenger, Bobby Lewis King Jr (33), trying to hide a clear baggie under his shirt. King was removed from the vehicle and searched. He was not in possession of the baggie, however, a plastic baggie was located in the grass right outside the door where King sat in the vehicle. King was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center. While at the Detention Center, Dfc. Bortchevsky checked the crease of the seat where King sat during transport and found two baggies with a white powdery substance, one baggie with a grey powdery substance, and one baggie with 3 blue pills. King was charged with CDS: Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine, Heroin and Oxycodone.

ONE LOVE FOUNDATION

Yeardley Love’s family created the One Love Foundation after her ex-boyfriend murdered her.  Her friends and family realized if it could happen to Yeardley, it could happen to anyone.  Many of them saw red flags but either did not realize it or did not know what to do about it.  As a result, they produced accessible, relatable, and modern resources to assist with starting a conversation about unhealthy relationships in order to spread awareness, share knowledge, prevent or stop abuse, and potentially save a life.

In February the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office coordinated a One Love Escalation Facilitator Training Workshop.  Approximately 30 representatives from various agencies participated and were trained to lead a discussion about the topic.  In response to the recent incident at Great Mills High School, the Sheriff’s Office held a focus group meeting on April 19^th to collaborate on ways to branch out in our community.

ARRESTS MADE IN LUSBY HOME INVASION

On March 16^th, 2018 at approximately 3:10am, Calvert County Sheriff’s Office patrol units responded to 959 Golden West Way in the Lusby area of Calvert County for the report of a home invasion.  Det. Mudd of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau was notified of the Home Invasion and responded promptly to begin the investigation. 

Det. Mudd’s on-scene investigation revealed that the victim, Melissa Diane Harris, was awoken from her sleep at approximately 3:00am.  She stated two light skinned males, approximately 20-40 years in age, wearing what appeared to be all black masks covering their faces kicked in the front door to her residence wielding what she recognized to be shotguns.  The two masked intruders then went directly to her bedroom and asked her “Where’s Timothy or T-Bo”.  Ms. Harris’ believed that they were referring to her ex-husband.  Ms. Harris stated that she does not live with him and the intruders left without taking anything from the home.

Crime Scene Technician Veeder arrived on scene to gather evidence and to photograph the scene.  Det. Buck teamed up with Det. Mudd and Det. Jernigan and worked diligently to solve this case.  Several investigative leads were developed in this case which led detectives on a timely investigation.  During the course of the investigation, detectives authored several search warrants and conducted many interviews.  Additionally, video surveillance from several cameras was reviewed, forensic downloads were performed, and numerous items of evidence were gathered.

Three suspects were developed during the investigation.  They are identified as William Gary Edwards (W/M, DOB: 11-10-1999) who is incarcerated at the Charles County Detention Center.  The second suspect was Ijaaz Butler (B/M, DOB: 07-04-1992) who is also incarcerated in the Charles County Detention Center. The third suspect identified as Demar Rynell Mason (B/M, DOB: 06-16-1983) resides in the Chesapeake Ranch Estates in Lusby.

Det. Buck submitted Applications for Statement of Charges on William Gary Edwards (W/M, DOB: 11-10-1999), Ijaaz Butler (B/M, DOB: 07-04-1992) and Demar Rynell Mason (B/M, DOB: 06-16-1983) for the charges of Home Invasion, Burglary in the First Degree, Conspiracy to Commit Burglary in the First Degree, Burglary in the Third Degree, Burglary in the Fourth Degree, and any charges deemed appropriate through the District Court Commissioners Office.

Criminal Arrest warrants were issued for the three suspects in this case. The warrants for William Edwards and Ijaaz Butler were lodged as detainers with the Charles County Detention Center.  Demar Mason was located and served an arrest warrant on April 19, 2018.
