PRESS RELEASES FOR AUGUST 25TH, 2014

During the week of August 18 through August 24 deputies of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to 1,426 calls for service throughout the community.

Theft Case #14-46490: 
Someone went into a mailbox, opened a piece of mail and stole a $20 bill that was inside.  The theft happened in the 1000 block of Concord Court in Owings on August 18 sometime during the day.  Dep. W. Rector is investigating.

Burglary Case #14-46526:
A home in the 2600 block of Cove Point road in Lusby was burglarized on August 18 between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Two briefcases were stolen.  Cpl. P. Foote is investigating.

Burglary Case #14-46636:
A home in the 12000 block of Rio Grande Trail in Lusby was burglarized between August 17 and 19.  Small home appliances were stolen.  Dep. D. Naughton is investigating.

Destruction of Property Case #14-46664 and 46680:
A fence, mailbox and two vehicles sustained damage between 2:30 and 6:45 a.m. on August 19 in the 11900 block of Susan Lane in Lusby.  A mirror on one vehicle was broken and the windshield of another was smashed at two separate homes.  One post and some post caps on a fence were broken and a mailbox was damaged.  DFC R. Kreps is continuing the investigation.

Destruction of Property Case #14-46717:
Unknown suspect(s) cut the telephone and cable lines to the Lusby Fastop on H.G. Trueman Road on August 19 at 1:30 p.m.  DFC R. Wilson is investigating.

Destruction of Property Case #14-47050:
Someone broke out the back passenger windows on a vehicle parked outside a home on Kyler Road in Huntingtown overnight between August 20 and 21.  The back hatch of a van was also dented.  The amount of damage is $1600.  DFC J. Lord is investigating.

CDS Violation Case #14-47339:
On August 22 at 10:23 a.m. DFC R. Kreps responded to Prince Frederick Ford for the report of a woman trespassing and possible CDS activity.  An employee advised Kreps that there was a woman in the bathroom who would not come out.  Kreps knocked on the door and the woman opened the door.  She was identified as 20 year old Amber Michelle Coppage of Mechanicsville.  Coppage appeared disoriented and under the influence of a substance.  Coppage was found to be in possession of two packages of K2/Spice and a smoking device.  She was arrested and charged.

Theft from Vehicle Case #14-47664:
On August 23 between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. someone entered a vehicle that was parked in an overflow parking area of the Flag Ponds Nature Park in Lusby and stole cash and credit cards.  The victim advised that the money was taken from his wallet and a friend’s purse that had been left inside the vehicle.  He was unsure if he had locked the vehicle.  DFC J. Bell is investigating.

CDS Violation Case #14-47679:
DFC J. Bell responded to the area of Sharon Drive and Susan Lane in Lusby on August 23 at 9:28 p.m. for a reported possible intoxicated driver.  He located the vehicle on Susan Lane parked on the side of the road with the headlights on.  He pulled behind it and could see a male sitting in the driver’s seat.  Upon walking up to the vehicle, he noticed the male slumped over with his cell phone in his hand.  He knocked on the window and the male woke up.  He was instructed to exit the vehicle.  Drug paraphernalia and suspected Heroin could be seen inside the vehicle and in the suspect’s lap.  The suspect was identified as Vincent Douglas Smith II, 24 of St. Leonard.  Smith was arrested and charged with possession of Heroin and a hypodermic syringe.

Theft from Vehicle Case #14-47726:
Someone broke the window of a vehicle parked outside a home in the 1100 block of Golden West Way in Lusby on August 24 at about 1:30 a.m. and stole money and clothing.  It is being investigated by DFC J. Bell

Disorderly Conduct Case #14-47858:

Lynn Evans Hayden, Jr., 46 of Mechanicsville, was arrested by Dep. W. Durner for being disorderly on August 24 at 9:00 p.m. while attending a concert in Solomons.  Hayden was asked multiple times by police to stop yelling and screaming profanities but he continued to do so.

CALVERT COUNTY CRIME SOLVERS

Calvert County Crime Solvers and the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the person or persons responsible for stealing a yellow 2011 CAT rubber tire loader worth $130,000 from a work site at the Dunkirk Park and Ride between August 14 and 15.  The loader was later found undamaged in the 8200 block of E Street in Chesapeake Beach. The windshield and both the driver’s side and passenger side windows on a water tanker truck were broken while it was parked at the same work site as the CAT tire loader during the same timeframe.  The tanker was discovered to have been moved to the back of the lot.  The damage is estimated at $750.

Destruction of Property Case #14-45447:
The gas cap door was pulled off of a vehicle and six dents were in the passenger side rear quarter panel when the owner observed it on August 13 outside his home on Colton Court in Prince Frederick.  The damage is estimated at $400 and is believed to have occurred on August 12 between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.  DFC P. Wood is investigating.
CDS Violation Case #14-45460:
On August 13 at 8:22 p.m. Dep. S. Moran conducted a traffic stop on Md. Rt. 4 and Broomes Island Road in St. Leonard.  The passenger was found to have suspected drugs in his possession.  Clifton Wayne Ladd, Jr., 22 of Dunkirk, was arrested and charged with possession of Oxycodone and possession of Meperidine.

Burglary Case #14-45466:
Someone caused about $300 in damage burglarizing a home in the 4800 block of Calvert Drive in St. Leonard during daytime hours on August 13.  Three pairs of size 9 ½ tennis shoes, Weatherman, Air Jordan and Nike, were stolen.  DFC J. Bell is continuing the investigation.
Burglary Case #14-45498:
DFC J. Livingston is investigating the burglary of a home in the 1400 block of Carlon Court in Huntingtown that occurred on August 13 at 11:20 p.m. while the residents were at home.  The homeowner reports that she heard her burglar alarm chime and noted that the front door was open.  She called to another occupant of the house who replied that they were not near the front door.  She then heard someone going out the front door, looked outside and saw a shadow running up the driveway.  Police arrived and performed a canvass of the area but no one was located.  The victim discovered some cash and her car keys missing.  The keys were later located in the driveway.  Anyone with information is asked to contact DFC Livingston at 410-535-2800.
Destruction of Property Case #14-45595:
Someone cut the padlocks on several storage units at the “Calvert Self Storage” on Skinners Turn Road in Owings sometime between August 10 and August 14.  Unit owners were asked to examine the contents and determine if anything was stolen but at this time, no owners have reported any missing items.  DFC P. Aurich is investigating.

Someone smashed the driver’s side window on a vehicle during the daytime hours on August 15 while it was parked outside a home on Bootstrap Trail in Lusby.  The damage is estimated at $300.  Nothing was stolen from inside the car.  DFC M. Velasquez is investigating.
Theft Case #14-46000:

A woman on Bafford Road in Lusby advised Dep. M. Trigg that sometime overnight between August 15 and 16, someone stole two bicycles from her back porch.  A white and green girl’s Pacifica and a white, black and blue boy’s Huffy totaling $240 in value were taken.  The victim said that she discovered the two bikes missing and noticed that a third bike, a red Huffy, had been left on the back porch in the same location the stolen bicycles had been in.  The investigation continues.

Destruction of Property Case #14-46008:

A mailbox in the 2000 block of Henry Hutchins Road in Prince Frederick was knocked off its post in the early morning hours of August 16.  DFC A. Woodford is investigating.

Theft Case #14-46027:

On August 16 between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. someone opened the mailbox at a home in the 2000 block of Crow’s Nest Lane in St. Leonard and stole cash and a gift card from inside two envelopes.  Dep. C. Idol is continuing the investigation.

Burglary Case #14-46222:

Between August 15 and 17 unknown suspect(s) entered an unlocked shed behind a home in the 800 block of West Chesapeake Beach Road in Owings and stole tools valuing more than $600.  A Klein Tools volt meter, DeWalt drill, Craftsman screwdriver set and  Craftsman hand wrench were among the stolen items.  DFC J. Lord is investigating.

Theft Case #14-46307:

A red Huffy bicycle was stolen from the yard of a home in the 1300 block of Gregg Drive in Lusby between August 16 and 17.  The bike has a red and black seat and 20 inch wheels.  The investigation is being handled by DFC R. Weems.

PRESS RELEASE FOR CHIEFS OF POLICE AWARD

Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans presents Zachary Forschen with the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association Scholarship Award for $500 along with a Sheriff Salute.  Zach will be attending the University of North Dakota in the fall and majoring in Criminal Justice.  

According to their website, “Each year the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association offers a Scholarship Award opportunity to full-time post-secondary education students enrolled or planning to enroll in a law enforcement curriculum. Residents of the State of Maryland between the ages of 17 and 21 may compete for this prestigious $500.00 scholarship award. Selection of the scholarship recipients will be based on scholastic achievement and community/school involvement.”

Destruction of Property Case #14-43756:
A mailbox was damaged on Hoile Lane in Huntingtown August 4 overnight.  Cpl. J. McCarroll is handling the investigation.
Theft Case #14-44013 & 44016:
A pink and white Walmart bicycle and a Green Machine big wheel, together valued at $180, were stolen from the front porch of a home on Heron Lane in Lusby during the daytime hours on August 5.  A second Green Machine big wheel was stolen from the back yard of a second home, also on Heron Lane, during the same time frame. Dep. T. Holt is investigating.
Reckless Endangerment Case #14-44347:
Dep. B. Schaefer responded to a home in the 90 block of German Chapel Road in Prince Frederick on August 7 at 12:28 p.m. for a firearms complaint.  The complainant advised that a white male walked out of the residence onto a porch and fired a gun into the air.  Schaefer made contact with two subjects inside the residence.  The homeowner, Joseph Wilmer Wightman, III, 70, admitted he shot a gun off his porch into the air to clear it.  A friend had reportedly brought the weapon over but took it with him when he left the residence.  When asked, Wightman advised he had been drinking.  Wightman was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and alcoholic beverage intoxication/endanger and discharging a firearm. Disorderly Conduct Case #14-44614:
On August 8 at 9:53 p.m. Dep. A. Curtin was working a special assignment providing security at a concert at the St. Leonard Firehouse.  A male became irate with fire department staff members after he was told that the concert was at its’ capacity for patrons.  The man became extremely irate, using profane language and would not leave.  Curtin attempted to escort the man, later identified as Michael Virgil Corley, 24 of Port Republic, out of the area but Corley repeatedly tried to turn around and walk in the direction of the concert entrance.  He was ultimately placed under arrest and charged with disorderly conduct.

Theft Case #14-44694:
Someone stole two Tow Max Power King tires off a camper parked at the Chesapeake Ranch Estates Campground in Lusby sometime between August 6 and 8.  DFC J. Bell is investigating.
CDS Violation Case #14-44734:
On August 9 at 4:15 p.m. DFC J. Bell responded to a house on Golden West Way in Lusby for the report of a male lying in a driveway who appeared to be unconscious.  Bell arrived and observed a male, later identified as Nicholas Andrew Rapp, 26 of Lusby, lying on the ground next to a vehicle.  Rapp was responsive but incoherent.  When he got up there was a syringe located underneath his body.  A second individual, identified as Gary Roger Williams, 25 of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was in the passenger seat of the vehicle and also appeared to be unconscious.  Bell made contact with him and he was also responsive but incoherent.  Several white pill halves were scattered on his lap.  Both men were transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital for treatment.  Rapp was charged with possession of CDS equipment and possession of drug paraphernalia; a syringe.  Williams was charged with the same two offenses as well as possession of Alprazolam.

Disorderly Conduct Case #14-44807:

On August 9 at 11:46 p.m. Dep. N. Gilmore responded to the Southern Community Center in Lusby for a reported fight in the parking lot.  Upon arrival Dep. Gilmore did not observe anyone fighting.  As she patrolled the parking lot she saw a vehicle parked with the engine still running, occupied by two males.  She saw a beer bottle near the rear tire on the driver’s side of the vehicle.  She approached the vehicle and noticed another can of beer by the driver’s legs and detected a strong odor of alcohol.  The driver was identified as Devon Leon Rawlings, 34 of Huntingtown.  Rawlings became belligerent.  He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and drinking alcohol in a retail area as well as attempting to drive a vehicle while impaired by alcohol and several other traffic offenses.

PRESS RELEASE FOR DARES BEACH STORE ROBBERY

On Sunday, August 3 at 3:43 p.m. an employee at the Good Day Market located at 1701 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick advised the Calvert Control Center that the store had been robbed.  Units from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police Barrack “U” arrived within minutes of the incident.  The scene was safeguarded and perimeters were established.   No suspect was found in the immediate area. 

Investigation has revealed that a white male with a beard, in his 20’s to early 30’s with a large frame of 6’ to 6’-4” and weighing 210 to 250 pounds entered the store.  He is described as wearing a black or dark blue baseball cap with some white on it, sunglasses, a blue sweatshirt, a long sleeve white shirt under the blue sweatshirt, baggie blue jeans and black shoes/boots.  He eventually approached the counter and asked for cigarettes.  While the sole employee was ringing up the items, the suspect handed her a note telling her to give him all the money.  The clerk complied and the suspect then left the store.  A witness in the parking lot advised police that he saw the suspect get into a small vehicle on the passenger side and leave the scene.  The exact amount of cash stolen is unknown at this time. No one was injured during the robbery.

Destruction of Property Case #14-42332:
Two eleven-year-old boys and one thirteen-year-old boy, all of Lusby, were charged with destruction of property on youth reports by DFC J. Hardesty on July 28 at noon.  Numerous victims on Stock Drive in Lusby observed the juveniles breaking mailboxes along the residential street.  They identified the youths after DFC Hardesty and DFC R. Weems located them riding bikes through the neighborhood and stopped them for questioning.  The boys were released to a parent.
Theft Cases #14-42336, 42419, 42539:
All the mail from three mailboxes that had been delivered between July 18 and 27 at three homes on Birch Drive in Huntingtown was stolen during that timeframe.  All three victims had been away from their homes during that time period.  The investigation by Dep. L. Kelly continues.
Burglary Case #14-43153:
Unknown suspect(s) burglarized a home in the 600 block of Texoma Lane in Lusby between July 29 and August 1.  Two decorative mirrors were stolen and $160 in damage was done.  DFC M. Velasquez is investigating.
Theft Case #14-43234:
Sometime during the day on August 1, someone stole a red and black Mongoose bicycle and a pink and black mountain bike from the front yard of a home on Field Drive in Lusby.  Dep. C. Idol is continuing the investigation.
CDS Violation Case #14-43284:
On August 2 at 2:16 a.m. Dep. M. Trigg and Cpl. A. Moschetto observed a vehicle drifting back and forth into travel lanes on Md. Rt. 4 northbound near Stoakley Road in Prince Frederick.  They followed the vehicle and saw it continue to straddle or cross over the center and left edge lines.  They attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, however, the driver continued to drive another two hundred yards before stopping at Plum Point Road in Huntingtown.  The driver, Tyler James Niland, 22 of Chesapeake Beach, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana less than 10 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia; a plastic bag, DUI, driving on a suspended license and negligent driving in addition to several other traffic violations.  The passenger, Christopher Joseph Rathbone, 24 of North Beach, was charged with possession of marijuana less than 10 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia, a plastic bag.

Destruction of Property Case #14-43536:
Dep. L. Kelly responded to a home on Salisbury Place in Prince Frederick for the report of a broken glass door.  The homeowner advised that on August 3 at about 11:00 a.m. he heard a loud noise in the basement area of his home.  He went down there and saw that the outside pane of glass on his sliding door had been shattered.  Dep. Kelly is continuing the investigation.

Someone broke the lock off the door to a shed behind a home in the 12000 block of Century Manor Drive in Dunkirk sometime between July 30 and August 3.  Nothing was taken from inside the shed. DFC J. Lord is investigating.
